Radios transmit analog and digital data

29 September 2010 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

With both VHF and UHF technology, Satel’s range of data radios covers all popular frequency ranges, starting at 135 MHz, right through to the licence free 869 MHz range as specified by ICASA.

These low frequencies, coupled with high receiver sensitivity, make them well suited for applications in the industrial environment. Units are available that can reliably cover distances from a couple of kilometres to tens of kilometres. As this radio communication is direct, communication is not dependent on cellular network coverage, or any third party service provider. These serial-based data radios are able to transparently transmit low baud rate serial protocols, such as RS232,RS422 and RS485. It is also possible to transmit popular protocols such as Profibus DP and MODBUS RTU.

The Satel M2M package, commonly referred to as point-to-point or machine-to-machine package, allows for the bidirectional transmission of analog and digital signals. The kit consists of two radios operating in the licence free 869 MHz band, along with whip antennas, connection cables and mounting accessories. Also in the kit are two I-Link 100s, which interface with the analog and digital signals. The standard modules have four digital inputs and outputs, as well as two analog inputs and outputs. Expansion units are available to increase the number of I/Os.

The kit is simple to use and is virtually plug-and-play, with minimal setup required. The inputs on the one unit correspond to the outputs on the other unit, and vice versa, making the kit a virtual cable for analog and digital data transmission. The M2M kit is suitable for applications starting at a couple of hundred metres range, or in applications where it is difficult to run cable reliably. In applications above 500 metres range, the cost of the cable alone can exceed the cost of the entire kit.
