Exar has added another versatile device to its single-chip RS232/RS485/RS422 product family. Featuring 15 kV ESD protection and operating from 3,3 V to 5 V, the SP337 is suitable for factory automation, process controls, embedded PCs, security networks, point-of-sales equipment, and other applications requiring use of both RS232 and RS485 protocols. The device offers full support for the DB9 serial port connector, and its RS232 mode provides three drivers and five receivers to enable all eight signals required for DB9 (3TX/5RX). The RS485 mode includes two independent high-speed RS485/422 full duplex transmit and receive channels (2TX/2RX).

The SP337 has a high input impedance for up to 256 transceivers on the serial communication bus (1/8th unit load), enhanced failsafe protection, and is available in two RS232 speed grades: 1 Mbps (SP337EU), and slew limited 256 Kbps (SP337EB). Both EU and EB parts offer 15 Mbps in RS485 mode. A single pin toggles between modes, allowing easy programmability. Products are available in commercial (0 to +70°C) and industrial (-40 to +85°C) operating temperature grades. All bus pins are protected against severe ESD events up to ±15 kV (human body model).
