While still being based on the popular ST ARM9 Core, the SIM900R differs from the full-featured SIM900 in that it has a dual-band radio as opposed to quad-band.
Although it still features a full TCP/IP stack for full GPRS connectivity, it does not support FTP or e-mail, like its full-featured flagship counterpart. Enhanced features, such as the SIM900’s ability to report GMT and GPS location of the cell tower to which it is attached, are also not present on the SIM900R.
The new stripped-down module is targeted at applications requiring GPRS, SMS, voice or data-call capability, with pin-compatibility to the full featured SIM900 device, allowing for one PCB design and ease of migration, should customers require the additional functionality which the SIM900 offers.
