Systems Technologies has designed and manufactured an RS232/485 converter which is not only a communication device but is also a diagnostic tool enabling the user to check the integrity of the RS485 comms line. The device reduces problems due to echo on the lines and warns if the line has been terminated according to the company.
One of the limitations of RS485 is that a maximum of 31 devices can be controlled per unit. The Systems Technology converter has one port and two channels and thus it can support 62 devices from the one converter. Another limitation of RS485 is that the protocol only allows communication through a cable to a maximum distance of 1,2 km. The converter can be used as a repeater to extend the range of communication.
The unit is fully isolated - the lines are internally balanced and components protected with MOVs. It can withstand surges up to 15 kV thereby protecting the PC from power surges through the serial port.
The components used are all CE and TUV compliant and the unit has been developed in compliance with international standards (eg IEEE).
The company says that the converter is also very cost-effective coming in at under R1000.
