Remote port and web monitoring has become a reality with AccelePort Xp, the newest addition to the Digi International's AccelePort asynchronous adapter PCI product line.
"Monitoring functions that could only previously be done on a server itself, can now be undertaken from any workstation on the network using the AccelePort Xp," says Gawie Basson, Senior Pre-Sales Engineer, Digi products, at local distributor SPS South Africa. "The AccelePort Xp is a new-generation serial port card with a dedicated processor that provides remote port diagnostics and manages the web monitoring."
The AccelePort Xp is best suited for multi-user (retail point-of-sale, industrial control processing, data collection and office automation) and remote access service (RAS) implementations, providing a high-speed 921,6 Kbps bidirectional connection.
"PortAssist Manager, Digi's new web browser-based management and reporting software, allows the AccelePort Xp to perform basic diagnostics, enhanced network administration and monitoring across all supported operating systems," Basson continues. "As terminals, printers, modems and video devices transfer data at ever-increasing speeds, the need for even faster serial connections becomes critical."
According to Basson, it was due to market demand that the product was introduced in South Africa. The AccelePort Xp is compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000 and NT 4.0, Novell NetWare, AIX and leading Unix operating systems including SCO OpenServer and UnixWare, Sun Solaris, Linux and HP-UX. Targeted AccelePort Xp applications include multiple-point data collection, multi-user workgroup, warehouse automation, retail point-of-sale, kiosks and remote access dial-in and dial-out solutions.
