The latest firmware release (version 1.5.66.0) for Laird Technologies’ BL600 Bluetooth low energy (BLE) modules implements multiple features designed to enhance security, including a unique feature called ‘whisper mode pairing’.
Typically, BLE uses simple secure pairing when two devices wish to communicate securely. This process establishes a secret link key to correctly authenticate devices. However, in most cases the pairing process itself is carried out on the same exposed wireless medium and is therefore still vulnerable to interceptions and attacks. Thus, Laird developed an additional mechanism for bonding using the standard built-in simple secure pairing.
In whisper pairing mode, the wireless module’s transmission power is automatically decreased when pairing is detected to be in progress, effectively creating a proximity-based security layer. Laird points out that this provides a viable alternative to near-field communications (NFC) for short-range applications requiring enhanced security. An additional benefit of the BL600 firmware release is that it offers AES encryption and decryption.
Laird provides access to the software download centre to qualified OEMs at no charge.
