SIMCom’s recently unveiled SIM7230E provides multi-band LTE/HSPA+/HSPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS/GSM/GNSS wireless connectivity in the industry-standard PCI Express Mini card format.
Its processing power is provided by an ARMv7 Cortex A5 (1 GHz) application core, dual telecom core (up to 500 MHz) and a Cortex-M3 core.
Featuring a USB 2.0 interface, the module delivers GSM/GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA/LTE-FDD performance for data transmission with low power consumption in high-speed download and upload.
Chris Viveiros, general manager of SIMCom’s local distributor, Otto Wireless Solutions, believes the SIM7230E will be warmly received in the South African market, albeit with a caveat: “The product is very new and we will be going through the testing and approval process as soon as the first silicon arrives on our shores,” he said. “Unfortunately, as is the case with many of the current LTE modules on the market, compatibly across both LTE-FDD and LTE-TDD is uncommon.”
Viveiros remains confident, prior to any testing, that the LTE-FDD protocol will make the module compatible with both the MTN and Vodacom networks in South Africa, which accounts for the majority of the company’s customer base.
