I/O adapter provides field-selectable RS232/422/485 serial port

26 September 2001 Computer/Embedded Technology

The ISO COMM1.PCI is a PCI bus isolated single channel serial I/O adapter from Sealevel Systems. It provides a field-selectable RS232/422/485 serial port supporting data rates up to 460,8 Kbps.

Isolation is important in installations where the equipment connected to the PC is either located far from the host system, or on a different power transformer circuit. True optical isolation on the ISO COMM1.PCI eliminates the effects of ground loop current, a commonly neglected and misunderstood phenomenon that leads to data errors and the destruction of communications equipment.

The serial port can be configured as RS232 when highly reliable standard serial ports are required, or RS422 mode can be selected for long distance device connections up to 1524 m where noise immunity and high data integrity are essential. RS485 is selected to capture data from multiple peripherals in an RS485 multidrop network.

Up to 31 RS485 devices can be connected to the port to automate data collection. Sealevel offers optional DB9 terminal block adapters to simplify field wiring and custom pin-out configurations. In RS485 mode, onboard auto-enable hardware automatically handles the RS485 driver enable, allowing the RS485 ports to be treated as a standard serial port by the operating system. This allows the standard COM: driver to be utilised for RS485 communications.

Sealevel's advanced COM drivers for Windows 95/98/ME/NT and 2000 providing IRQ sharing, Windows serial diagnostics, and other enhanced features are included. Linux and QNX utilities are also included to simplify installation.
