Smartcard controllers optimised for next-generation telecom applications

Hitachi announced a range of smartcard controllers specifically for next-generation SIM card applications at the recent Cartes 2001 held in Paris. The enhanced AE45C1 and AE46C 16 bit microcontrollers are capable of handling current and future high data rate mobile telephony services, with a guaranteed upgrade path to 3G applications, states the company.

Hitachi says it developed the AE45C1 and AE46C controllers to meet new demands from the telecommunication smartcard market including powerful applications enabled by GPRS and EDGE. The devices feature 196 KB ROM, which is the world's largest on-chip ROM integrated into a smartcard device, along with 6 KB RAM, and 36 and 68 KB EEPROM on the AE45C1 and AE46C respectively. This highly integrated memory enables the microcontrollers to fulfil the requirements of the new applications by storing common and general-purpose applications in the low-cost ROM, freeing the EEPROM for specific data and applications.

The large memory enables the controllers to host Java Card APIs, Crypto APIs, GSM, USIM and WIM (WAP identification module) applications, as well as micro-browser and other operator-specific applications. It also allows card manufacturers to implement Java Card and SIM specifications.
