Exar has expanded its family of UARTs with the XR17C152, PCI bus interface communications device. Third in the series, the device is compliant to industry PCI Bus specifications and is targeted at system management, portable communication devices, and serial port solutions for systems based on industry standard CompactPCI, PMC, VME and PC/104Plus form factors.
The XR17C152 supports 5 V PCI bus signalling specifications at full 33 MHz clock speed (four times faster than the conventional ISA bus) and allows direct interface to the system bus - this eliminates the cost and need for a PCI-local bus bridge device, and delivers a significant reduction in board space requirements according to the manufacturer. The XR17C152 supports 32-bit data bus format. Automatic RS485 half-duplex direction control output with programmable turn-around delay feature simplifies hardware and software design, and compensates for signal propagation delay in network installations with long cable lengths.
The device, in 100-pin TQFP package, has 64 bytes of TX and RX FIFOs in each UART channel and is capable of operating up to serial data rates of 3 Mbps.
