Enabling the next generation of high-performance wireless designs

30 March 2026 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Espressif Systems has expanded its wireless connectivity portfolio with the introduction of the ESP32-E22, a high-performance connectivity co-processor designed for next generation embedded and IoT systems. The device integrates tri-band Wi-Fi 6E and advanced Bluetooth capabilities, enabling designers to develop wireless products that require higher throughput, lower latency, and improved efficiency.

Unlocking the potential of Wi-Fi 6E

As wireless networks continue to grow in complexity, the traditional 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are becoming increasingly congested. The ESP32-E22 addresses this challenge by supporting WiFi 6E operation across the 2,4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. Access to the newly available 6 GHz spectrum allows devices to operate in a significantly cleaner frequency environment, improving performance and reliability in dense wireless deployments.

The device supports channel bandwidths up to 160 MHz and features 2x2 MU-MIMO capability. Combined with orthogonal FDMA technology, these capabilities enable simultaneous communication with multiple devices, while maintaining high data throughput and low latency.

These characteristics make the ESP32-E22 well suited for applications such as high-definition video streaming, augmented and virtual reality accessories, smart home gateways, industrial IoT infrastructure, and bandwidth intensive edge computing devices.

Integrated Bluetooth connectivity

In addition to its Wi-Fi capabilities, the ESP32-E22 integrates dual mode Bluetooth connectivity. The device supports Bluetooth Classic as well as Bluetooth Low Energy based on the Bluetooth 5.4 specification. This allows developers to maintain compatibility with legacy Bluetooth devices, while also supporting modern low power IoT applications.

Enhancements in the Bluetooth 5.4 specification improve reliability and energy efficiency in device-to-device communication, making the platform suitable for sensor networks and hybrid connectivity systems that require both high bandwidth wireless links and low power peripheral communication.

Dedicated connectivity architecture

At the core of the ESP32-E22 is a dual core RISCV processor operating at up to 500 MHz. This processor runs the full Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocol stacks internally, allowing the device to function as a dedicated connectivity processor.

By offloading wireless stack management from the main application processor, system designers can reduce the computational burden on the host microcontroller or processor. This approach improves system responsiveness, simplifies software architecture, and allows the host system to focus on application-level tasks.

To support a wide range of embedded architectures, the ESP32-E22 includes high speed host interfaces such as PCIe 2.1 and SDIO 3.0. These interfaces enable straightforward integration with modern microcontrollers, application processors, and system on chip platforms.

This co-processor architecture provides flexibility for designers developing scalable products where wireless performance requirements may increase over time. By combining tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, dual mode Bluetooth connectivity, and a powerful processing architecture, the ESP32-E22 provides a robust wireless platform for future connected devices.
