Miniature GPS 'smart antenna'

2 July 2003 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT Products & Solutions

Fortuna's latest GPS smart antenna is claimed to be a new milestone in price/performance ratio for a ready-to-use GPS sensor. Featuring Fortuna's SIRF Star II chipset, the U2 is a 12 channel receiver and antenna packaged in a 59 mm diameter housing with a 20 mm profile with integral magnetic mount.

The U2 features cold starts that average 45 seconds, re-acquisition in 0,1 seconds, 'foliage lock' for weak signal tracking, superior urban canyon performance, improved multipath rejection and various power management modes from 3 to 160 mA at 3 or 5 V d.c. The output is normally an NMEA data string at RS232 level at 4800 baud, providing position, velocity, altitude, status and control.

Locally, the U2 is available with a 3 m cable with either PS2 or RJ45 connectors, handling power and data. Other formats are available such as USB and DB9. For portable vehicle use, a low cost cable with cigarette lighter plug with integral switch mode 5 V power supply interconnects the U2 with PDAs and laptop computers.

The U2 is suited for all types of mobile, marine, aviation and personal navigation, GIS, tracking devices, AVL services, etc. Fortuna also supplies the Star II chipset as a 34 x 22 mm PCB module for high volume applications, as well as low cost patch antennas.
