Magnetic sheets for noise suppression and RFID

20 August 2008 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Alps Electric has developed Liqualloy HMSAW series magnetic sheets for noise suppression and HMSAS series magnetic sheets for RFID.

Circuit board parts are becoming increasingly dense due to set products' higher functionality coupled with their smaller size and thinner profiles. Accordingly, interference from radio waves or magnetic fields that is unexpected at the design stage is likely to occur. So that end-products can function correctly, certain measures for noise suppression should be applied during the development period.

The HMSAW series delivers what is said to be the industry's best noise control with permeability of 35. The material is effective over the frequency range from 10 MHz to 5 GHz and in temperatures between -40°C and +85°C. It achieves minimum surface resistance of 1 MΩ in magnetic sheets measuring 0,05, 0,1 or 0,2 mm thick and with flame retardance according to UL94 V-0.

In addition, in some applications magnetic sheets are used to efficiently capture radio waves. In an RFID system, such as in eMoney applications, radio waves are influenced by other parts and devices and thus do not reach the antenna properly. In such cases, the efficiency of the communication system in terms of capturing the radio waves needs to be improved. For such requirements, the HMSAS series delivers magnetic permeability of 100 in the 13,56 MHz band, said to be the best in the industry.

Both types of magnetic sheets can be reprocessed into shapes that meet the requirements of individual products. For example, they can be punched out in the size of a mobile phone's battery cover or processed like stickers, depending on customer needs.
