Providing wireless connectivity to a device is not only about hardware integration; it also requires the development and integration of the software low layers of the application processor’s operating system to drive the embedded module. That is why Sierra Wireless provides these layers for the most popular operating systems in the industry, for the majority of its AirPrime high-speed MC series and smart SL series wireless modules.
Android
Sierra’s software packages for Android include USB drivers for the basic module communication, RIL (radio interface layer) and GPS HAL (hardware abstract layer) to translate wireless and positioning Android commands into embedded module commands.
Sierra has developed solutions for several Android versions (such as Froyo 2.2, Gingerbread 2.3 and Honeycomb 3.0/3.1) and continues to follow the Android evolution. In order to guarantee a turnkey solution, the company also works closely with application processor suppliers to pass pre-certification tests required for wireless applications (GCF, PTCRB, carriers).
Linux SDK
Sierra’s Linux SDK (software development kit) allows users to easily drive a Sierra Wireless module from a Linux operating system. Designed for the networking market, the SDK includes USB drivers, a large set of APIs and associated samples to configure wireless network access and use wireless services. Compliant with several Linux kernels (2.6.31 or further), the SDK has been tested with all the most popular application processors.
Windows Embedded
For Windows CE 6 and Windows Mobile/Handheld 6.5, Sierra’s SDK includes the drivers for the basic module communication, the RIL and some application samples to facilitate the API discovery. The SDKs have passed the Microsoft LTK for Windows Mobile and radiometrics tests for Windows CE under Microsoft Device Emulator.
