Two Littlefoot power MOSFETs for DC-DC converter circuits, including the industry's first PWM-optimised n-channel device with a 12 V maximum breakdown voltage rating, have been released by Siliconix, an 80%-owned subsidiary of Vishay Intertechnology. Both devices are intended for synchronous rectifier applications, serving low voltage outputs in DC-DC converters for PCs, network or routing cards, standalone power supplies, and other line-powered systems where a low-voltage microprocessor is needed. Previously, power MOSFETs optimised for synchronous rectification were available only in voltage ratings of 20 V or greater. The Si4838DY, with its 12 V VDS, offers a 40% overall performance improvement over comparable devices - with a maximum on-resistance of 3 mOhm and a typical gate charge of 40 nC. For applications where more headroom is required, Siliconix offers the Si4876DY, a 20 V device with 5 mOhm on-resistance and Qg of 55 nC. It is offered in Littlefoot SO-8 package.
