Long range wireless Internet access

In a world first, a South African communications technology company claims to be enabling small businesses to create the kind of wealth formerly only accessible to capital intensive companies, through long range wireless Internet access.
One of Q-Kon's solutions products, called IPConnect, is a marriage of IT and RF technologies that offers true non-line of sight capability in cells of ranges up to 20 km at minimal cost. IPConnect is a point-to-multipoint multimedia distribution system, ideally suited to Internet service providers and network operators in Africa. It is based on standard protocols that enable cost effective, flexible and manageable networks for anything from a handful to 1000 subscribers, says the company. The typical IPConnect head-end provides 27 Mbps downstream and 4,6 Mbps upstream. Multiple downstream and upstream channels can be added for future requirements.
Some of the features of the head-end system include network management for CPEs (customer premises equipment), which will encompass bandwidth management, centralised network intelligence and control and provision of quality service options.
Subscriber units include a UHF wireless unit which is remotely configurable and wireless telephony features using VoIP technology. Operating at UHF, IPConnect enables large networks to be deployed with one, or possibly two, central base stations. Centralising the functionality at the head-end and minimising investment at the remote terminals further decreases the network implementation costs.
Making use of the Internet, Q-Kon believes its IPConnect is, for many low capital and rural businesses across Africa, a vehicle to carry them forward to wealth creation.
