Wireless system construction takes the 'easy' route

26 March 2003 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

A cost-effective way to fast-track wireless system production is now available in South Africa. As anyone who has ever designed a wireless system from the initial concept to the final prototype knows, the journey from theory to practice is long and difficult.

The need to build a cost-effective RF system usually results in significant delays in getting to market and realising income. Then there are the software issues.

However, Rotrax Technologies says that there is an easier way - using the 'easy-Radio' modules made by a UK company, Low Power Radio Solutions. The modules come in kit form and take all of the current range of communications 'data-in' and 'data-out' radio modules so that various options can be tried to achieve the performance needed from the system. Rotrax Technologies is the sole SA importer of easy-Radio.

The only board components are the LED status indicators, the power supply, I/O pins and the sockets to accept the modules. All the intelligent circuitry is on board the module. Data can be fed in and taken out of the receiver to check that it is being correctly encoded/decoded and to check the range performance. Free software customisation can be written to suit individual needs, subject to a minimum quantity order.

Both the easy-Radio transceiver and transmitter have 10 user-selectable frequencies between 433-4 MHz and can be used at a range in excess of 250 m line of sight. The embedded easy-Radio software handles all encode/decode functions and over-air transmission of data.
